Pultruded FRP Profiles: Shapes, Sizes and Specification

09-22-2026

Pultruded FRP Profiles are ordered from a drawing, and a drawing describes a shape. The shape is the easy part. Along the pull axis the profile is stiff and strong; across that axis it is far weaker, because the glass carrying load runs lengthwise and only mat or veil holds it sideways. Wall thickness, resin, glass content, tolerance and bolt detail decide direction before they decide size.

This guide covers the standard pultruded FRP shapes factories produce, the dimensions a drawing must fix, and how to specify a profile.

What the Pultrusion Process Fixes in Place Before the Profile Leaves the Die

Dry glass roving is pulled from a creel through a resin bath, through a heated steel die that sets the wall and surface, then a puller and a saw. Because the pull never stops, Pultruded FRP Profiles take their reinforcement almost entirely along the length. Roving supplies axial strength and stiffness; mat, stitched fabric or the veil behind the surface supplies transverse properties and finish.

Exit from the die decides the rest: die temperature, pull speed and heated length set whether the section is fully cured when the puller grips. Fiberglass pultrusion profiles that leave short of full cure can pass a visual check and still move next week.

Why Load Direction Comes Before Dimensions in a Pultruded Section

The material is anisotropic and the gap between its directions is wide. Flexural and tensile figures published for FRP structural profiles are measured along the pull axis; the same laminate tested across it returns far less. Software that applies one modulus to a plate loaded in both directions will underdesign the transverse case.

Pultruded FRP Profiles cannot be thickened into transverse strength cheaply: extra wall raises weight, resin consumption and pulling force together. A wall thick enough for bending can still fail at a bolted connection, because the stress there is transverse.

The Standard Shapes and What Each Section Carries in a Frame

Factories produce a fixed set of pultruded FRP shapes: angles, channels, I sections, square and rectangular tubes, round tubes, flat bars and solid rods.

An FRP angle profile is a bracket and a stiffener: thin legs resist bending poorly and carry well when cornering a panel or bracing a frame. An FRP channel adds a web and becomes a beam with edge stiffness, which is why it closes the end of a platform. An I section concentrates material where bending stress peaks and spans further than a tube of the same mass. Tubes make clean columns and equipment frames; flat bars carry tension.

Pultruded FRP Profiles in a catalog are not a shared size list, so confirm whether your section is a running size or a new die.

Profile Dimensions, Wall Thickness and Dimensional Tolerances

Published FRP profile sizes cover outside width, height or diameter, inside diameter, wall thickness and length, and all are nominal. A drawing that says 50 mm square is not a specification, because 50 mm could be the outside face, the inside face or the fixing centers.

Wall thickness governs stiffness, mass, impact behavior and the strength of every connection, and it is also a process variable: FRP pultruded profiles with a thicker wall need more pulling force and heated length at the same line speed.

Tolerances belong beside the nominal figure, because a frame and a precision assembly carry different requirements. Most Pultruded FRP Profiles buyers accept ASTM D3917 for dimensional tolerances on structural shapes.

Resin Selection Follows the Exposure, Not the Price List

The resin behind Pultruded FRP Profiles decides chemical resistance, temperature capability and service life. Polyester covers most structural work in mild environments. Vinyl ester is chosen where acids, alkalis, solvents or cycling moisture attack an ester backbone. Epoxy appears where mechanical performance or temperature range justifies the price.

Name the resin grade rather than fiberglass. Concentration, temperature, exposure time and ultraviolet radiation all change the answer, so compatibility for the actual stream should be confirmed before the die is cut.

Glass Content and the Reinforcement Architecture Behind It

Glass content sets strength, stiffness and mass. Continuous roving carries the axial load, while mat, stitched fabric or a veil builds transverse properties and finish. A section for axial tension does not need the stack that one taking impact or a row of bolts needs.

Higher glass content is not automatically better: the result also depends on alignment, wet out quality, void content and wall geometry, and a voided laminate can test well on one specimen and disappoint later. Fiberglass pultrusion profiles should be bought against a stated glass content and void limit, checked on a cut section rather than a certificate.

Loads, Deflection and the Connections That Decide the Section

Before specifying Pultruded FRP Profiles into a structure, list the loads and support conditions: compression, tension, bending, shear, impact, vibration and exposure. Span and spacing then decide the profile. Most FRP structural profiles are selected on strength and then deflected in service, so fix the deflection limit before ordering.

Connections are where a section that passed the calculation often fails: drilling removes glass, bolting concentrates stress and clamping changes the load path, and each reduces the load carrying area.

Surface Finish, Color and Ultraviolet Exposure

A smooth surface suits handrails and equipment housings, while a gritted or covered surface is used where a walkway or ladder needs slip resistance, and a veil behind the resin can carry pigment and shield the laminate from ultraviolet. Color comes from pigmentation, a colored veil or paint, and outdoor work should state the exposure and any protection layer.

Delivery Length, Cutting and Site Installation

FRP pultruded profiles are usually supplied in fixed lengths and cut on site, so state the delivery length, cutting tolerance, end condition and packing. Longer sections reduce joints, but transport sets the practical limit.

Cutting leaves exposed reinforcement at the ends, so tools, extraction and a sealing step belong in the method statement. An FRP channel used as a handrail often needs its cut ends closed against moisture.

Put holes and notches on the drawing with tolerances: customized FRP profiles are made to a drawing that anticipates the connections, while a catalog section is drilled after delivery and loses capacity.

Standards, Testing and Batch Release

A specification should name the tests and acceptance limits: dimensional inspection, surface examination, resin content, hardness and mechanical testing cover most orders. Barcol hardness to ASTM D2583 is a fast cure check, water absorption warns early on voids, and dimensional checks against the published FRP profile sizes open every batch inspection.

Decide which values are certified per batch and which are reported once for the type, and fix the test method and limits before production.

How to Write an FRP Profile Specification

A workable FRP profile specification has four parts.

The drawing fixes the shape: section, outside dimensions, wall thickness, radii, hole positions, cut lengths and tolerances. The material section fixes resin, reinforcement architecture, color, finish, ultraviolet protection and chemical resistance. The performance section fixes loads, support conditions, temperature range and test requirements. The commercial section fixes quantity, packing, inspection and delivery.

State the direction of every quoted property, because a laminate has two answers. Send the connection drawings with the section drawing, because the fixing detail decides whether the wall thickness is right. Customized FRP profiles that arrive with both are a repeatable product, not a prototype.

An FRP pultrusion manufacturer should answer that drawing with three numbers before price is discussed: glass content, process window and test method. Suppliers price Pultruded FRP Profiles from the drawing, and a complete one gets a process answer first.

Conclusion

Standard Pultruded FRP Profiles give a designer a broad library, and choosing from it is the easy half. The hard half is stating the direction, the exposure, the connection and the acceptance limit.

An FRP angle profile specified once can be reused on every frame in a plant. An FRP pultrusion manufacturer that reads a drawing as process decisions is the shortest route to a section that performs.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the most common pultruded FRP profile shapes? Angles, channels, I sections, square and rectangular tubes, round tubes, flat bars and solid rods. The member's job, bending, torsion, tension or corner load, decides which fits.

How is the right size chosen? From load, span, support condition, allowable deflection and the fixing detail. Check the wall against the connection as well as the span.

Which resin should be specified? Polyester for mild industrial service, vinyl ester where acids, alkalis, solvents or cycling moisture are present, and epoxy where mechanical performance or temperature justifies it.

Why is wall thickness so important? It drives stiffness, mass and the strength of every bolted or clamped joint, and it also drives pulling force.

Can pultruded profiles be customized? Yes. Dimensions, colors, lengths, finishes, reinforcement stacks and new cross sections are open, provided a die and process window can produce them at a stable speed.

What should an inquiry contain? The section drawing, dimensions, wall thickness, resin, glass content, length, finish, quantity, service environment and test standards.
